I’ve been playing guitar since I was 13.

Like a lot of players, I started with tabs and learned enough to get by. I could play songs, but when it came to modes, I felt stuck. I knew the shapes and the names, but I didn’t really know when to use them or how to make them sound musical. Everything felt like guessing.

Growing up in Charlotte, I struggled to find teachers who could explain modes in a clear, practical way. Most explanations were abstract, disconnected, or overly academic.

After studying classical and jazz guitar and teaching over 25,000 lessons since 2007, one thing became very clear.

Most guitarists don’t need more mode information.
