I’ve been playing guitar since I was 13. Like a lot of people, I started with tabs and taught myself enough to get by. I could play songs, but I always felt like something was missing. I didn’t sound connected. I didn’t sound like myself.

I looked for teachers, but growing up in Charlotte, I couldn’t find anyone who could really help. Some didn’t seem interested. Others just didn’t know how to explain things in a way that made sense. So I kept pushing forward on my own.

Eventually I found some classical teachers after moving to Winston-Salem, which opened some doors for me. But I still wasn’t learning how to solo or express myself on the instrument. That led to years of chasing answers. I went on to study classical and jazz guitar in college, took lessons with over 100 different teachers, and attended masterclasses with some of the best in the world. I’ve now taught over 25,000 guitar lessons since 2007.

But even with all of that, what shaped me the most was learning alongside my students. Seeing what worked and what didn’t, and finding better ways to help people break through the same walls I used to hit myself.
